Accessibility

The Mono Platform is WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliant

Accessibility: a brief overview

What

The responsibility to comply with accessibility standards

Accessibility describes the responsibility to make products and services (including websites) accessible to people with disabilities.

The European Accessibility Act (EAA) states that by June 2025, companies must comply with the compliance standard of WCAG 2.1 Level AA .

Why

The internet should be an accessible place for everyone

Accessibility compliance is an important step towards ensuring that digital content is usable by a wider range of people, including those with disabilities.

Having accessible websites also supports business growth by reaching more diverse audiences.

How

The Mono Platform supports compliance with WCAG AA

The Mono Platform is compliant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA, hence already meeting the requirements of The European Accessibility Act (EAA).

WCAG 2.1 Level AA is a widely used compliance standard. Meeting this standard means that a website is usable by most people with or without disabilities.

WCAG 2.1 Level A and AA

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) were developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Each Level builds upon the former.

WCAG Level A – Basic Accessibility

Level A is the minimum standard for web accessibility and addresses critical issues that could block users with disabilities from accessing content. Under WCAG 2.1, there are 30 criteria to meet, including:

  • Text alternatives for non-text content such as images or video
  • Full keyboard navigation
  • Clear labels or instructions for forms
  • Compatibility with assistive technologies like screen readers.

WCAG Level AA – Strong Accessibility

WCAG Level AA builds on Level A by addressing more diverse user needs, making it the standard most experts recommend. It includes all Level A criteria plus 20 additional requirements, such as:

  • Adequate text and background contrast (minimum 4.5:1 ratio).
  • Content organized under clear, logical headings (e.g., H1, H2, H3).
  • Consistent navigation elements across the site.

WCAG's four principles of accessibility

WCAG outlines a series of guidelines and success criteria organized around four principles:

  1. Perceivable: Information and user interface components must be presented in ways that users can perceive.
  2. Operable: User interface components and navigation must be operable.
  3. Understandable: Information and the operation of user interface must be understandable.
  4. Robust: Content must be robust enough that it can be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies.

Overview of the WCAG Level AA requirements

This section covers an overview of the main categories of AA requirements.

Some of these requirements are up to the user to implement, such as color contrast and alternative text. Some are infrastructural and the responsibility of the platform, such as keyboard navigation. We will explain all areas below.

Principle 1: Perceivable

Guideline 1.1: Text Alternatives

Users must be given a text alternative to non-text content, unless this content is decorative.

The Mono platform labels all non-text elements. For images, the platform includes alt tags.

However, it is up to the user to add this alternative text.

Guideline 1.2: Time-based Media

For pre-recorded media such as audio and video, you must provide alternative methods of understanding the content, e.g. text captions on audio-only content, or audio descriptions on video-only content.

These accessibility adjustments are up to the user.

Guideline 1.3 – Adaptable

Audio Description or Media Alternative (A)

An alternative for time-based media or audio description of the prerecorded video content is provided for synchronized media, except when the media is a media alternative for text and is clearly labeled as such.

Captions, Live (AA)

Captions are provided for all live audio content in synchronized media.

Audio Description (Prerecorded)
Level AA

Audio description is provided for all prerecorded video content in synchronized media.
