What is data compliance?

What does it mean for a website to be data compliant? In short it means that the website operates within the legal requirements set by local data regulations. If your website is serving visitors from The European Union, then you will need to ensure that you follow the rules set forth by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

There are also other data protection regulations, like the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), which has its own set of rules for how data should be stored and processed.

Achieving data compliance can be incredibly difficult and time-consuming, even for large companies with a team of legal experts. However, these regulations apply to businesses of all sizes, not just the big players.

Achieving data compliance requires close attention from many different areas of your business, but there is one area where most businesses, especially SMEs, fail to meet standards...

Cookies are the key

Several data protection regulations, including Europe's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) have clear rules about how website cookies are stored, used, and declared.

New legislation has been introduced in recent years, and will continue to be updated in the future. The most notable of which is the European Union's ePrivacy regulation, also known as the 'cookie law', which will be introduced in 2022.

These changes make it difficult (or nearly impossible) to stay cookie compliant on your own without an automated solution. That's why we've introduced Mono Cookie Consent.

Our research

We were curious about just how many small business websites were compliant with local data protection regulations. So, with the help of our friends at Cookiebot™, we did a little research.

We analyzed hundreds of small business websites and found some interesting statistics on how they fare with data privacy regulations.

The results are interesting to say the least. So interesting in fact that we decided to turn it into an infographic, which you can download here.
